I thought the no change rule only applies to partner flights?

I'm trying to book someone in TLV-PHL on July 24th via ATH.

I came up with A3 929 TLV-ATH in J (;)) and US 759 ATH-PHL in Y.

Anyway around paying for J for the whole ticket although I will only be using J in the first short segment?
If not, does US open availability closer to the flight? It seems that the flight is an empty flight.

I thought so too.

1)AFAIK there is no way around it.

2)Yes, they open closer to the flight. EF will help on this one :)
