You have 3 options.
1) small cheap gadgets that you stick a contact on the wall, and corespoding door/window. - Very cheap yet totally not practical. (everytime u need tooo turn all on... all off)
2) Wireless systems that are so-so. as most of wireless technolegy get interrferance, has a limited range, and requires maintance (battery changes...)
3) proper wired system

-@OP why isn't wired an option?

You can get regular wireless alarm systems. They put it on the entries and supposedly it's as good as wired.
As far as intercoms the best for finished house I think is the built in phones system and you can get door boxes attached. And all u need to do is plug it in to your phone jack.
I happen to be looking into getting both of these now!

My house is fully wired for an alarm system. I refuse to pay $2.5K! to have some one install the system so I'm gonna do it myself...

To start I want to install the magnets/contacts on the windows and doors.

I noticed that there are two types: "normally open" and "normally closed". Which ones should I use, does it make any difference or is the main idea that I be consistent?

TIA!  :)
