If you are on contract it may void your warrenty, but you can usually restore the phone so that they cannot tell it was rooted.

When you restore, does it still tether?

Nope. The phone needs to be rooted or the (Wifi) tethering won't work.

Some companies charge extra for the mobile hotspot feature.

IIRC in order to tether wirelessly you need to use the mobile hotspot feature or root.

I have used easytether it's $10 for the one time purchase and no rotting is required. Granted you need to connect phone via usb and not Wi-Fi, but it always works, and is reliably fast

Verizon is different then all other carriers it allows tethering but it counts towards your data all companies that allow unlimited data (sprint) block tethering unless you root

-1 I have sprint with unlimited data and I tether all day (my phone isn't rooted)
