It gives you admin permissions so that you do things which a regular user cannot, for example tethering.
If you are on contract it may void your warrenty, but you can usually restore the phone so that they cannot tell it was rooted.
When you restore, does it still tether?

Nope. The phone needs to be rooted or the (Wifi) tethering won't work.

Got phone! Very happy so far. Anyone able to get tethering??
Why the need for tethering when you can turn the phone into a mobile hotspot? What am I missing?

Some companies charge extra for the mobile hotspot feature.

FoxFi, PDANet, SVTP, etc.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

IIRC in order to tether wirelessly you need to use the mobile hotspot feature or root.

I have used easytether it's $10 for the one time purchase and no rotting is required. Granted you need to connect phone via usb and not Wi-Fi, but it always works, and is reliably fast

Verizon is different then all other carriers it allows tethering but it counts towards your data all companies that allow unlimited data (sprint) block tethering unless you root

Thanks.

I have 2 of them, not opened, does anyone want to buy them off me?

I'm willing to sell both for $950 or best offer. Thanks.
