El Al luggage rules
« on: July 29, 2010, 08:15:35 PM »
I'm flying to Israel next week on El Al for yeshiva (till pesach) & their luggage allowance is very minimal, 1st suitcase 62" 2nd 44" @ 50 lbs each, & 1 hand bag @ 17 lbs. just wondering from anyones experiance if they are strict about the weight of the hand bag, & the size of the 2nd suitcase.
its a good thing I don't wear rabeinu tam tefillin or I'd be way over the 17 lbs!!

I won't hold anyone responsible if I get charged extra, as I know YMMV, but I just want to know in general if El Al is makbid.
thanks

depends on the agent but for 25 bucks you can get up to like 70-75 pounds

Is that done by the counter or in advance?
also if I call el al do they offer this, or is it something they only offer as a last resort?

are you sure that in your hand bag you are only allowed 17lbs because in the us flying domestic you are allowed 40 lbs. It could be that its 17 kilo which is roughly 40 lbs

It states clearly on their website that matmid members get 5 more kg. I thing its about 7 lbs. go to elal.com then on the top of the page click "frequent flyer" then click "matmid cards" and it will take you to the page with the matmid benefits one of them states that you get more weight. (sorry I can't copy a url from my phone browser) print it out and show it to the clerk in the airport just in case they make problems.

The 5 kg extra is only in a case were you fly woth weight concept. For example tlv-europe, one is allowed 20 kg, so a matmid member gets 5 extra. From and to the usa there is piece concept and a matmid member gets nothing extra

I just checked out el al web site & they say 50lbs each suitcase of 62". (idk why that agent told me 1 62" & 1 44")
the extra 5 kg for matmid members it says is only for flights excluding north america.
so I called TWICE & asked what I can bring & they said both times that I can bring 50lbs plus 5 kg bec I'm a matmid member (i told them its an ewr-tlv flight)
does anyone have experiance bringing the extra 5 kg & did they let?? (i don't have a paper to back me up bec it says excluding north america)
also with hand bags 1 csr told me I can bring 1 bag
& the other told me since I'm matmid I can bring 2 hand bags (1 reg & 1 laptop, which online says is only for matmid gold....)
basically noone knows what they are talking about, anyone have any advice who I should belive.......

Just a warning I was in TLV and they told someone who's suitcase broke, that since it was 25 kg they were not responsible for it. Because although they accepted it theey don't take resp. for overweight. I don't know if this is true but I saw it happen. (it wasn't elal, but the damaged/lost baggage is subcontracted by all to the same company at the airport.)

Handl. Is one piece no matter what the agent says on the phone.
The airline is responsible, no matter how heavy. Most airlines will not take more then 32 kg a piece, since its to heavy for the workers to carry.
If the check in agent lets it pass, then they are responsible. Dont believe every bs you are told! Most airlines let their business and first passengers bring an extra piece of handl. I can promise you as a eco. Passenger without status, you will not be allowed

I don't understand how this makes sense.
According to the ElAl website , business class to the US is allowed 3 pieces up to 70.5 pounds each while all other destinations are only allowed 66 pounds total ??? ??? ???
Is that correct?
