Does the $200 credit for Delta flights on the Delta Gold card work for gift cards?

Since Sapphire Preferred offers better insurance, will I still get free baggage if I only show my Delta card at the airport or must I charge something on it?

Isn't that only with UA? With AA for sure you don't have to charge anything to the card.

 PROBLEM:  Delta refuses to put two people on the same ticket with my Skymiles (for the free baggage) because I want to use egift certs (I got using the Plat). Apparently you cant have more than one passenger on one ticket when using credits of any kind (vouchers, egift cards, certificates, etc.)

So it was either using up a bunch of our egift certificates or getting a free checked bag for my family member. Any way around this?

ETA: They're raising the fees on all the delta cards but barely changing the benefits.
