The active display is probably the best feature. Nowadays when we all basically use our phone as watches it's really cool to not even have to turn your phone on to see the time.

With my old phone, I would be able to see any picture I took with the phone locked without unlocking it. With this phone it makes me unlock it before I can view the pictures. Is this a Moto X feature or a new Android feature (my old phone ran Jellybean)? And is there a way to disable it?

Not sure what you mean - from the lock screen I accessed the camera (using both the "twist" shortcut and the swipe left, and was able to swipe to view the camera roll just as you would usually.

I'm using the 2014 Moto X, on Lollipop.

When I swipe to view the camera roll it makes me unlock my phone first.

1st gen Moto X running KitKat.

IIRC, that's just how the 1st gen phone works - and that actually makes sense. Why would you want your pics unprotected if you are locking your phone? I don't have a "password" on my lock screen now, so it could be the new one works the same way.

On my last phone (Gnex) you were able to see only the pictures that were taken while the phone was locked, so anyone taking your phone could take pictures and delete them but wouldn't have access to the pictures YOU took.

Am I understanding this correctly? Is this like the Nexus that will work on any carrier?
Kinda awesome. IF only all phones started coming out like that.

The nexus doesn't necessarily work on all carriers, (I believe) you have to choose which carrier it should work with. With the new Moto X Style you can use the same phone for all carriers, all you have to do is change the SIM. That's awesome!!! I currently have the Moto X 2013, and I'm planning on getting the Style as soon as it comes out

Smart wife :)

There haven't been any great reviews yet for camera and battery life etc so.. worth waiting anyways.

I upgraded by mistake to lollipop, and my phone is suddenly using a ton of ram. People experiencing this?
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.
