Last time I checked, it is not a trustworthy practice to pay for someone's miles/points with a check and then drain your bank account before he cashes the check.

It's just not so black and white. Can you TRUST him to do business properly? Perhaps not. Would I trust him 100% that I would even get my money? I'd be a little bit wary.

If he paid up to me, he is trustworthy enough for me. As long as he has the money he can buy again.
