I believe 3500 Co miles would get you a free ow ticket.

Make sure you won't end up better paying.
Most of the time (especially if using Accela) you end up saving a lot using points.

That's correct. Be careful - before you transfer points to Amtrak with the intention of booking Acela, verify that the train you want to book is not blacked out!
