I got my car in august. Plates expired in September. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

Can anyone who has bought a new or used car recently and registered it in NJ confirm how long it took to get license plates?

I bought a used car on Nov 15 from a dealership in NY. They supposedly submitted the paperwork to the NJ MVC and I was supposed to get my plates within 45 days (i.e., end of Dec). Meanwhile, my temporary interstate license plate expired 3 weeks ago. I contacted the NJ MVC and they said that they need to know which MVC the paperwork was submitted to in order to track status. I can't get the dealership to give me an answer about which MVC they submitted it to (I suspect they outsource this to a third-party company). Anything else I can try?

I have a set of license plates from a lease that I just gave back that I haven't returned to the MVC yet. Am I better off putting those plates on my new car even though it doesn't match the registered vehicle? Or am I better off driving around with an expired temporary license plate? I figure if I got a ticket for having expired temp license plates I can argue that it was delayed due to COVID. But if I have the wrong plates there isn't much of an argument I can make.

Driving with temp plates probably better.

I got my used car October 23 from a NY dealership, NJ plates came in on December 21.

Also a friend of mine had his plates registered to him but never shipped because the mvc dealing with it had a covid case and closed down for 2 weeks.

Never do this!
Expired temp plates should not be an issue. You can see many on the street with expiration in March/April 2020

I can get NJ Title and Registration work done within days for $150 fee, PM me for details. There have been MANY people reporting getting tickets and their cars impounded when driving with expired temps or expired registration in NJ, don't be lax about it its not worth it!

You sound very biased. I know many people driving around with expired temps for months without issue. Where have you seen reports of people getting ticketed and their cars impounded?

ETA: In Lakewood you can easily get an appointment, there are almost always appointments available a few weeks out.

I didn't see any reports in the news, I know the stories gone bad because I have people calling me up to help them after they got pulled over and need Registration ASAP. Just because people drive around with expired temps without an issue that doesn't mean they are clear from getting pulled over, people do many things wrong when driving and get away with it... All is flowery until they get busted

I would assume they would just charge you a diagnostic fee which is between $75 - $100.
