Car 1 - yes but no other car involved... No full coverage, junked car...
Car 2 BH no
Car 3 BH no
I was student most of the time btw. I'm sure there is some level of risk, but at the time my options were to pay ins as a young driver in NY/free car ins. cause that's how it is when you take a car from home...
Not sure if border would disclose info to ins company, shouldn't there be some sort of privacy law?
Now if someone already was in accident, I'd think that driving the car after that would be too risky...
Anyone else??
Thanks.

Anyone have any experience with this while hitting a second car?

Anyone have any experience with registering a Canadian car in the states? I have a car from Canada that's in Brooklyn and I want to change the registration over anyone have any advise on how this works?

Thanks.
You need to import the car first. And NO you don't need to go to the border you can go to customs in Newark at the port.

I believe you need to get a letter from the dealer in Canada (ie Hyundai dealership for a Hyundai) saying that it complies with US safety standards.

Yup, I think you need a letter that there aren't any outstanding recalls. Also if the car is under someone else's name you need to get a "gift" letter from that person signed and notorized. Plus there are a couple of other things too, which I don't remember off hand.

I think you would lose a lot of value by moving it from Canada to the US.

Are you suggesting keeping registered in Canada (and sell there eventually)? Pros/cons... discuss please...

Cars cost A LOT more money over there. So probably worth selling it there and buying something in the states.

Choice A= sell car there, buy new one here...
Which is B and C??
Drive car with Canadian plates in NY vs. doing the switcheroo.

Although it's done very often it really isn't a good idea to drive here long term with Canadian plates, for insurance reasons. Besides, car insurance in Canada is through the roof even for a good driver with absolutely nothing negative on his record.
Also, might have trouble selling a car in the US that has a kilometer based interface.

most cars have Mph also just in smaller letters.  Also, I'm pretty sure there's a way to put in a new label in on the display show mph in larger letters and kph in smaller letters

I can tell you from personal experience that Canadian insurance is much more expensive than in the states. I doubt your thinking you remember is more accurate.

Back in the day. I was a 20 something year old with no driving record, Canadian insurance was on my mother's name; so by me it was cheaper to insure in Canada...
