Number is only reflective of what's in the file.

It may be necessary, but it certainly is not sufficient.
You can get denied just on your number without them ever getting to look at your credit file. That is why it matters first.

Correct, but you won't get approved just on your number.

And with people spouting off "my FICO is 815" and "I have a 804!" it's more my situation than yours.

Higher FICO gets more instant approvals.

Higher FICO gets more instant approvals.

I know plenty in this game with 820+ ain't getting instant approvals due to # of inquiries and # of new accounts, etc.

But I'm not sure we're arguing. I agree the number is what is first looked at, but it is far less important as to what's on the report.

Ask anyone who has tried applying with an 790 FICO with one secured credit card to his name.

+1. I got declined from chase (BA and SP) with a 832 score because I opened too many cards in the last 2 years. Could not talk my way out of it with recon even though I offered to move cl around.

...and if they had a 620 FICO they would have received the same results so what is your point.

As you attest to in the latter post, denial as it relates to instant, but recon can work.
I have dealt with 2 unique credit files and can say with certainty that number is definitely not a factor once you "turn the first page".
Additionally, I have never seen final decisions made based solely on the number.

OMG two credit files? Now there is concrete proof. I will defer to the experts here that have 30 years of files to look at and spent 7+ years at CB. You all have a nice day.  :)

I don't think that has anything to do with the Amex free FICO score, I just got it and nowhere does it mention anything about Experian Plus (I just reread the terms, I can C/P it if you want me to)

I have Chase Slate, just noticed today when I login it gives me my Experian Fico score. But more than that it gives some details such as number of recent inquiries, payment history, and percent of credit utilized. more useful than the Amex or Barclay ones (don't see my Citi one)

Is this new?

Quote
APPEAL TO ACCOMPLISHMENT
(also known as: appeal to success)

Description: When the argument being made is sheltered from criticism based on the level of accomplishment of the one making the argument.  A form of this fallacy also occurs when arguments are evaluated on the accomplishments, or success, of the person making the argument, rather than on the merits of the argument itself.

Logical Form:

Person 1 claims that Y is true.
Person 1 is very accomplished.
Therefore, Y is true.

Person 1 presents evidence against claim Y.
Person 1 is told to shut up until person 1 becomes as accomplished as person 2.

That about sum it up?  ;D

One argument based on years of data and the other argument based on opinion would be a more accurate summarization.  :P

Years of data showing that the score is more important the actual file?

I'll belive it when I see it.
