The 13.1" Vaio Z12.
10% off if you signup with a .edu address plus there's a $300 trade-in offer.

How do you get the 10% off? I only see it if you buy n extended warranty.

Can anyone recommend a bag for the Sony Z? I have this bag and I love it, but the Z is a tad too big for the laptop compartment (though it does fit in the other compartment).
So how are you liking the Z?
Find any good bags yet?

Loving it, though I did have one scary situation where it locked up on me (hardware was making whirring sounds and the screen blanked), battery pull solved that. I got squaretrade to give me a three year accidental damage warranty for $200 (for the original purchase price of $1499, thats the amount shown on my MicrosoftStore invoice).

I'm using the same bag (linked to earlier in this thread), it doesn't fit in the laptop compartment but I love the bag.

Great, it's an awesome laptop!
Will squaretrade replace it if you break it though?  Or just cut you a $1,499 check which probably won't be enough to replace it?

Also through squaretrade you probably lose the extra credit card warranty year because they're not the manufacturer.

Squaretrade will spend up to purchase amount to repair/replace it, or refund the purchase amount. It's more of a protection, I hope I never need it but if I do I'll make sure to maximize its value :D

Either way, I have three warranty options: One year manufacturers warranty, one year extension of that from my CC, and another year (plus accidental for the first two years) from Squaretrade.

Dan, y'think there's any chance we'll be able to convince Sony to take back our Zs and give us new ones? This new Z is waaay hott (though the guy in the video is fugly and can't speak English for the life of his).

and no internal dedicated graphics.

That external thing has both, and even together it shouldn't way much more than the Z13. I love that you can detach it and you have a ~2.4 laptop.

I have the previous one and it is an absolutely amazing laptop. Worth every penny!
From reading info from link it seems like the main upgrade is 1080P screen but overall looks like they downgraded a few settings if you don't get the dock.

I had the 1080p on the previous Vaio and couldn't stand it.

No built-in optical drive or dedicated graphics=downgrade in my book.  I don't really card if it weighs 2.5 pounds now instead of 3 pounds when you need a separate dock to get the same functionality.

I like the idea of not having to carry the GPU and optical drive if I don't need them.

Will .5 pounds really make a big difference?
When don't you want a GPU?

.5 pounds makes a difference to a walker like me. And this smaller lappy will fit better in my e-Sling. I prefer no dedicated GPU when I'll be on battery, and/or when I want my lappy to run cooler.

Reviving an old thread here, hope y'all don't mind.

Update, the new Sony Z is reportedly available (for pre-order) in the USA.

Some thoughts:

The Power Media Dock weighs 1.5+ pounds, and requires (?) its own power adapter (brick?). The PMD is an interesting concept, I dunno if I'd be happy to be an early adapter, but I'm curious to see/hear user feedback.

The sheet battery is an amazing concept, but weighs over a pound. It's ultra-thin, but I doubt it offers the reported ~7 hours of battery life. (same for the standard battery, which also supposedly offers ~7 hours).

The system is beautiful, but $4700 (or even $3,000) for a fully loaded laptop is retarded.

FYI (this is for Dan): Sony still offers the 1600x900 display on the new Z. (there's also a full 1080p available if you want it).

Edit: Here's a better (more extensive) review.

Integrated battery+external optical+external gpu=No interest on my part.
Z12/Z13 were the best laptops ever made IMHO.  Grab one if you can still find it and you won't regret it.

I love my previous iteration Z as well.

Dimensions/weight (sans PMD) beat the Z12/z13 hands down granted, there's no discrete GPU:

For me an integrated battery is the nail in the coffin.  I always carry spare batteries for my electronics when traveling and avoid integrated if I can.  Plus it just seems trying too hard for planned obsolescence.

They offer the extended battery sheet for $200, what's wrong with that? Are you worried the integrated one will deteriorate?
