They offer the extended battery sheet for $200, what's wrong with that? Are you worried the integrated one will deteriorate?
How much bulk does the batter sheet add?  And I'm sure the integrated one will deteriorate with time.

A tad over a pound and .32 of an inch.

They've taken a great laptop and made everything external.  By the time you're done you'll need a suitcase for all the pieces/parts!

Granted. But the base laptop isn't quite a netbook, and has 7+ hours of battery life for <2.6 pounds.

Does the new macbook air get any closer to comparing to the Z?
At least they have the backlit keyboard back.

Downsides compared to Sony Z12/13 are no replaceable battery, no BT, no discrete GPU, no integrated optical drive. Upsides are sleek looks, thinner/lighter and newer gen processor.

Ah, missed that, sorry. I think the ports need to be compared as well, as (IIRC) the Z12 (and possbily Z13) are USB 2.0, while the Macbook Air might be 3.0. There are probably other differences as well (e.g. HDMI vs DisplayPort, but I didn't look).

Its USB 2.0 (since 3.0 is a competing standard with DisplayPort/Thunderbolt) and no HDMI

I didn't realize Thunderbolt was a competing standard, but it seems you're right.

The new Z doesn't have replaceable battery (granted it has an attachable one) or intergrated optical drive either.
So they're pretty close, no?

Yes, but a different animal. The Z offers an optional PMD and sheet battery. I'd say if you're willing to pay retail for the Z, the new Air is a good option assuming it'll dual-boot Windows and it performs the way you'd expect based on the specs. (the early macbooks had customized processors that were inferior IIRC).

The Air also seems to be a whole lot cheaper...

I'd still rather have the Z13 over the MBA.
Here's one for $1,399: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Sony-VAIO-13-i5-4GB-7-Pro-64-Laptop-BLACK-/250858866269#vi-content

MBA is $100 cheaper.
Removable battery and intergrated optical drive are worth that difference or is it the general Sony v Apple debate?

I'd say the Sony is built better. And you get a fingerprint reader ;)

I would use neither on the subway.

True.
I just heard that people got mugged when using white headphones even if they didn't have an Ipod. Just the look attracts attention.

With the student discount and buying Apple gift card at % off, the gap in price becomes pretty big...

I can see why you're tempted to go Apple, and with their current offering I'd say you should definitely consider it.
