I did have a dog living in the same house that I used to live in, and I have several friends that have.

Ok, I'm trying to understand from a dog-owner's perspective.

My father always said the reason why charedi people don't have them has something to do with either owning a "tumedikah" animal and/ or according to him (or something he saw somewhere) Kayin (Cain) after he killed his brother Hevel (Abel). hashem gave him a pet dog. I don't remember the reason behind it.

The difference being that even Charedim who steal will admit that stealing is not allowed, owning a dog it's not so clear.

BTW: When buying a house always find out if the owners had Dogs or cats. They can temporarily mask the stench but it stays for years. I know a guy that had to rip up the floor under the stairs....
(IIRC there is a difference btwn cat urine and dog, one stinks for ever one not as bad.)
