1&1 has webmail and can be set up with a mail client. When you buy just a domain I think it includes only 1 address for free. There can be more that forward. You may want to check into that.

There was someone here selling google apps accounts not long ago.
You can get a domain name on godaddy for less then $3 with a 70% coupon.

I use godaddy. Can be confusing starting it up but I never had a problem with them.

If you use godaddy, their tech ppl can set it up for you for free.

I have it forwarded to my regular email account. Also pretty cost efficient. (cost me like 10 bucks for 2 years).

CMIIW This is for existing custom domains, it doesnt create them and im pretty sure you can use gmail for this too
