I found a coupon code for godaddy to make the domain .99 for the first year.  Now what do i do about the email?  They want about $47 for their simple business email product

CMIIW This is for existing custom domains, it doesnt create them and im pretty sure you can use gmail for this too

It definitely can be used for new domains. You have to purchase the domain separately (you found it for .99) then attach to the email accounts.

Its a great deal.

I currently have my Business email account grandfathered in, wondering if it'll be free for a while, but even if not IMHO it worth the $5 a month Google charges to have your business email on a private domain - giving it a more professional face

There are cheaper ways to accomplish that. I have my email set up to catch-all, and they all forward to my gmail. I have a privatename@bussines.com as a responding email with gmail. Total cost is about $20 with godaddy for first year including ftp storage which I never figured out.

If you use godaddy, their tech ppl can set it up for you for free.

I have it forwarded to my regular email account. Also pretty cost efficient. (cost me like 10 bucks for 2 years).

How do you reach their tech people?

Google trough Godaddy charges $10 per year.
Airlines sending me "We're in this together" emails.

Bruh, where were you when my suitcase weighed it 51.50 pounds?

There is a charge for the domain (godaddy 1&1 etc) and a charge for email service (google apps etc)

That's a cheap solution, but if you have more than one account then Google Apps is prob the way to go

So im fairly confused. If the free outlook option really works why should i not use it?
Is it really worth paying the $100 for a grandfathered apps account or $50 a year for a new one?  What will i get from google apps that 1&1 mail service or outlook wouldnt give me?

I didn't know about the outlook.com option, but looking at it more I don't see any reason to use google over outlook. That's what I would do, although there may be differences that I Wolff only see by actually using it.

A quick test of outlook.com shows new an important shortfall. Outlook will mark messages as read on the server immediately upon downloading them. From searching online it looks like seeing it to download headers only may take care of the problem. Checking...

Are you talking about when they show up as read because you opened them in the Reading Pane? here how to fix it http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/make-changes-to-the-reading-preview-pane-HA010356424.aspx#_Toc361132464

I don't see why you can't get an account with IMAP and use with outlook.

Update

It is still marking them as read on the server. This is only an issue if you will be using non-outlook.com interfaces to view your emails.

Also, it seems that this would apply only when using outlook.com as an interface for email hosted elsewhere. If you are setting up your domain to have its email hosted by outlook them everything "should" be based on how outlook marks it.

I had mentioned that earlier, but the email needs to be hosted somewhere. 1&1 will host one address with a domain. If you need more then that will not work.

So use godaddy or some other company which allows more than one, for much less than $50.

1&1 are the cheapest.
In general I would recommend paying a few extra bucks rather than going with 1&1 for anything. Their system is so annoying and such a hassle to deal with it's not worth the money you save. Their system is the worst I've ever dealt with. (well, actually, I once had a client who had his domains registered with some Italian company, that was actually the worst. 1&1 is the worst American option I've seen.)
