United is running a promo giving up to 60% milage bonus on purchased miles.

If within the next 3 days 1-250 people buy they will give a 30% bonus

If within the next 3 days 251-500 people buy they will give a 35% bonus

If within the next 3 days 501-750 people buy they will give a 40% bonus

If within the next 3 days 751-1,000 people buy they will give a 45% bonus

If within the next 3 days 1,001-1,250 people buy they will give a 50% bonus

If within the next 3 days 1,251-1499 people buy they will give a 55% bonus

If within the next 3 days 1,500 people or more buy they will give a 60% bonus

Not such a great deal unless you get the 60% and you are not looking to sell them but rather use the points. 160k points = 2 free r/t to israel but I am sure you can buy regular tickets for less than $3700+. Also you couldnt sell these points to a broker as they cost about 3 cents even with 60% PROMO. so really only makes sense if you are flying first and wanna save $1k.

The only reason i can see buying is for 5-10k to top up account if you just need a little bit more. But then I would just advise 1k spending at office supply stores with ink!

Is there something I am missing? Why would anyone do this?

I dont think you are missing anything.

This is no good deal.

Unless someone needs a few points to top off an account and for whatever reason they don't want to use UR, then I could see someone buying. But UA charges ridiculously high to buy miles, so even with the 60% bonus its still way higher than what its worth to pay for the miles
