Why call it bribery? Call it showing appreciation for a job well done, most people work harder/better when they know their work is being appreciated.

Aha. And what is wrong with a nice, heartfelt "thank you!"?

I never really understood the whole tip thing, isn't this exactly what they're getting paid to do?

My personal belief is that it is a scheme for employers to pass on an expense to the customer.

Ideally, a valet, waiter, bellhop, delivery guy, sushi guy etc... should get paid a proper wage  (As is the case in Europe). However, there is only so much that the establishment can charge the customer, and so this scheme has been invented where the employer is legally allowed to pay a waiter 2 bucks an hour, and rely on tips. (If I am not mistaken, tips are considered income and are taxable).

When I go to an expensive restaurant and paying $250 for a meal for 2, I have no interest in paying a tip. I don't think it's my business to help the business cover their expense.

I don't know why but in my area most people think that only a non Jew you have to tip but a Jew they will never tip.
That is so sad and upsetting.. And just wrong.

Agreed. If you tip, tip all.

+1
I only tip for the sake of not making a chillul hashem, and perhaps making a kiddush hashem.
Unless they do something extra etc. that would be different.

I know that in most states, if the Employer knows that the employee is going to get tips they can pay them about $2.25 an hour. (As long as they make up the amount of Minimum wage). So when you tip it helps!!

I'm not here to cover employers expenses.
