Do I need to tip delivery guys?
« on: August 26, 2013, 03:04:30 PM »
I am having a treadmill delivered from Costco. The delivery is full service including installation and removal of packaging. Do I need to tip the delivery guys? If so, how much?

You don't need to do anything, if that is what you wanna hear.

But is it the right thing to do, and is it excpected? YES.

In general, I am not a fan of tipping, not because I am cheap, but because it makes life awkward. I would much rather if Costco just charged a $20 tipping fee and be done with it.

My feelings about tipping don't just apply here, they apply everywhere. I would much rather that the establishment charge the money upfront.

Then you can't tip for service and they have no incentive to serve you nicely. If the guys are rude and do a bad job, don't tip at all. If they do an OK job tip $5. If they absolutely are awesome, tip $10

You can call that blackmail or bribery.

Ideally, workers who do a bad job should be disciplined or fired. But then again, we live in reality, and in reality most of these people will do a mediocre job without bribery.

They do that in some restaurants in Lakewood, due to the fact that most people wouldn't tip otherwise!!

Why call it bribery? Call it showing appreciation for a job well done, most people work harder/better when they know their work is being appreciated.

Never said it doesn't, only it seems that OP is opposed to bribery on ideological grounds.

A salary is the same as bribery, the only difference is that it is legitimate.

Huh?

A salary is what a person earns for their livelihood. Tips, according to some fellow members on this thread, are for incentive to do a good job.

So let's understand the "incentive" idea:

A guy is being PAID a salary to do his job, but here is the kicker: he won't do a GOOD job unless you give him MORE money. That, my friend, is called blackmail.

However, this is only if you believe a tip to be an "incentive".

If you believe (as I do) that tipping is actually part of the worker's livelihood, then tipping is something that is only right to do. My issue is, if it is indeed part of his livelihood, why not bill it directly into the cost?
