Finding uncashed wedding present cheques
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:03:59 AM »
I recently found 2 cheques my wife and I received as wedding presents from friends of our parents, but never cashed. Their combined value is $375.

We got married two years ago.

Is it too late to mention to these friends that we never cashed their cheques and perhaps get replacements or do we just leave it and too bad on us?

Did you ever send them thank you notes?

They never called you asked why you didn't cash the checks? Are you sure they are friends.  :)

Unless they are very friendly or rich in which case you can drop a "i found your check" and see what happens.

Way too late. Rude to bring it up now since their financial situation may have changed.

Don't checks expire after 6 months?

For our wedding we received a card from a neighbor with a check inside - but the check was blank!

I never felt comfortable asking him to fill it out so I didn't....

But yes, I did send him a thank you card.

IME the banks don't check the date on a cheque. I've deposited a cheque for about $225 approx 2 years after it was written.

You should not cash it unless you ask them first. The account may be closed or have no balance.

If they are close friends I don't see the problem in asking them. The way I see it, every gift that you get ends up being given back in one way or another over time. Your parents will give their friend's children checks by their weddings as well, so the favor gets returned. Perhaps ask your parents to ask them if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

I just don't get it. If I give someone a check for a gift and they don't cash it in a couple months I ask them what happen. Most likely it was misplaced or lost but either way I still want them to get the gift (check).

You don't think that there are folks who don't keep track of what checks they wrote?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
