Kashrus / Kosher in Israel
« on: September 02, 2013, 12:45:20 PM »
Keeping Kosher in Israel, ironic as it is, seems very complicated. There are all sorts of hechsherim to be aware of and everyone has the one's that they hold of and some they curse out.

Are there any experts on the Forums who can help break down this complex topic?

The main questions on my mind are:
  • What is Badatz?
  • What is Rabanut?
  • What does Badatz do that Rabanut doesn't and vice versa?
  • Are badatz and Rabanut the same throughout Israel? Are there people who won't eat Rabanut in one city but eat in another? Or in time that Badatz isn't available?

it would be best for you to speak to a competent rabbi rather than open a can of worms on these forums

Badatz is any 3 Jews siting together.
According to the Rabanut, Rabanut shouldn't be eaten by frum jews, it's just to have non-frum not eat chamur issurim. There were many in the previous generation who were against such a "hashgocho" as they felt (among other things) it will cause confusion. Prophecy fulfilled

Why such a fear??  It's a forum.  Who's forcing anyone to contribute or to read any thread??!
Nothings gonna happen, it's only a forum.  "Maximum" - a person going to E"Y will actually have some knowledge of what not to eat...

I'm for open discussion, no holds barred!
Just the fact that there is a fear in the air of even discussing this topic, should already scare a consumer of this industry.  י"ל The only way forward is for more openness, a la the new hotline ;) !

while you might be technically correct, when people refer to badatz they are referring to the badatz of the eida chareidis

In our circles. I've heard Bet Yosef referred to as Badatz on many occasions - even on this forum

What should I tell you.., you know like when you discuss something for hours/days on end, but at the end realized you got nowhere?!

For me it still has not reached even close to ad nauseam.  Especially since it is a constantly developing industry... If only it had as many pages as that child-bearing thread in JS ;)

Aha, because there are no shortage of rabonim who will be very open about this topic, right?!

Re. opinion, my opinion is constantly subject to change, I have no set opinion on this (OK, I don't generally eat rabanut plain, but besides that...), and it is constantly being molded.
עאכ"ו וכש"כ וקו"ח visitors who know absolutely nothing.

BTW, this applies in the USA also.  I trust no one באמונה שלמה.

You guys are right about this, people refer to other agencies as Badatz. But I think the biggest pitfall occurs when people refer to even the Eida as Badatz. Problem is, every time a. visitor comes to Israel and hear they can eat badatz, noone remembers to tell then that basically every agency in Israel calls itself Badatz XYZ.
