You lost me on this one. What you do with the chicken has nothing to do with the way it was killed.

Of course it does.  You can't look at an action without its context.

That's the same way we slaughter all meat. It's intended to be the least painful manner of death.
I am not disagreeing.

This isn't a court case.  :P

If you want to justify the killing on the chicken because it is feeding the poor that is fine. How you kill the chicken will determine if it is a humane way not what you do with the chicken after you kill it.

Oh, I didn't realize you were arguing that the manner of killing was inhumane, as opposed to a different manner.

What's your preferred method? Why is slitting its neck worse? It takes an instant and it loses all blood to the brain instantly.

Is this the same way it works in humans? I don't except you to answer that because you know what my next question will be.  ;)

You want to know my preferred way to be killed? I'd rather not be killed. However, if the actual killing of the animal is agreed to be fine, I don't think this is an unethical method. Humans also have a principle of preserving the dignity of the body, which obviously doesn't apply here..
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

Actually, it isn't.  Humans have two separate blood supplies to their brain, so there is still brain function even if the carotid is severed.  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK11042/

Kaparos will be eliminated by chabadskers when we start getting rid of metzitzah b'peh and our beards. Or maybe once we start drinking C"S.
Just ain't gonna happen.

Don't see why it needs to be fly by night. It's not by me.

Not necessarily. Women and children doing kapparos several days before Yom Kippur is a relatively new enactment by rabbonim. The minhag of doing it "b'ashmuros" was essentially eliminated for women.

Kapparos does not require a chicken. If things continue to get out of hand I can see it slowly phasing out.. first a p'sak that women and children should use money, and eventually...

How is it swung over the head? Held by the feet, wings or neck?

Wings would seem less painful but am glad it is not by the neck.

I guess there is no one answer? Why doesn't that surprise me.  :)
There's no religiously preferred method. People do however the chicken seems most comfortable. You'd be surprised how calm they are, if you know how to hold them. It sounds worse than it is.

The word "custom" was used to describe this. Would that be accurate?

I'm just basing it on what I remember... He is probably right (wings). I personally do it with money.

Is it an absolute commandment? No. Is it a made up thing with no real basis or meaning? Also no. A lot of things we do are "extra credit", so to speak.
