A laptop doesn't fit in my pocket so it's easier to get away from that yetzer hara than it would be if I had a smartphone. However, this is not the right thread for discussing whether or not to have a smartphone.

Sorry that I'm late to the party here... But trying to follow... U guys are depositing US checks with dollar amounts into ur Capone (and spoofing location).. but that doesn't help me unless I have a buddy in states that consistently needs to buy shekel... Can I deposit an Israeli check into capitalone? (Obviously with the spoofing). I suppose I can open a dollar account and then write Israeli leumi checks to myself and then deposit them? But is that what anyone has done? Or only American checks? TIA

Only american checks.
Thanks that's what I thought. We use covercy and it works very well. Rates are really really low.

Mobile deposit is free. What's their pricing?

Mobile deposit is free but requires a friend. What do you do if you don't have a friend? Rates are lower than Israeli post office. Don't remember off top of my head... But fee is so low it is almost negligible

Is 360 deposit not working online as well or only app?

From your question I deduce both. I've only tried from a PC - doesn't work.

What I do is I spend on my American credit cards to accumulate points. I earn money in shekels so I have to get the money back to my US bank to pay the bills. So I take the shekels for my purchases and use them to buy American (open) checks from a money changer. (When I'm lucky I find someone who needs to cash a US check for shekels.) I then go ahead and deposit the checks into my US bank account.

Oh I see, that is pretty amazing. I mean covercy is from comfort of home, but I do this often enough that it could make sense to do some legwork. My only question is do all money exchanges give you open american checks? How does that work exactly (what is it calld it Hebrew)? Is the check from the money changers account or something?

He's referring to open american checks the money changers buy from customers.

Might not work so well in TA.

I meant Tel Aviv as opposed to certain neighborhoods of Jerusalem.

Why would Jerusalem have more "open checks" than TA? if anything TA sees just as many tourists as Jlem if not more... Anyway, I work in JLEM so it's not a problem to get the checks here when needed...

So if I understand correctly, a tourists comes with a check from their account written out to nobody, for 2000$ , then the exchange gives them shekel? Who is to ensure this check is even valid?? How do u know it won't bounce or something... And does that mean u can only buy the exact amounts listed in their checks?

You have to work with a money changer who you know and can trust. If a check bounces you have to know that you get reimbursed fast. You should only buy checks from accounts that the money changer has seen a number of times before without any trouble. I know some money changers very well and I also personally know many of their customers so I can choose quite wisely from the checks which are available.  Generally those checks will be from people living here off their US bank accounts. It definitely makes a difference which neighborhood you're in.
