http://collive.com/show_news.rtx?id=33874&alias=boeuf-bun-serves-artisan-burger

I'm reserving judgment till I visit, but this seems to be somewhat of a knock-off of ABC.

Does Boeuf and Bun's burger not look exactly like the Breakfast Burger?

Had a chance to visit the Loft, a relatively new kosher restaurant in Boropark. And, boy, was I happy I did.

Located in the dredges of Boropark, a city not known for its aesthetic beauty, walking in was like an oasis in the dessert.  Set in a nice ambiance, the place is warm, with a pretty waterfall in the background.

(I apologize in advance for the poor photos.)

We started off with four appetizers:

The shredded beef, duck tacos, the lollypop chicken, and a Godzilla roll.  While all the appetizers were solid, the star of the show was the lollypop chicken which was phenomenal.  At only $10, the flavors were truly unique: it started off with a sweet, sugary mango and ended with a kick of jalapeno. Really unique and a must get item.

If you're gonna skip one, I'd skip the duck tacos, which actually were not on the menu, but were less inspired, and despite the apparent ingredients weren't as flavorful as I would have expected.  The shredded beef, made famous AFAIK by Estihana, was a completely different texture (not stringy, but three medium sized chunks) and definitely worth the $12 price tag. A note on the sushi: Almost shockingly, the sushi is, given what the establishment is going for, is woefully underpriced to the benefit of it's patrons. Their premium rolls were all $12 or less.  Considering the competition where most rolls are $18+, with some rising to near $30, the Loft's sushi is a steal... and quite good, to boot.

For my main, I couldn't help myself from ordering the pepper steak ($44) and here, too, I was pleasantly surprised. While a bit more peppery than its Le Marais counterpart, I found that to be a good thing, and otherwise could hold it's own against the LM cousin. Not to mention, the steak was cooked perfectly, just slightly rarer than medium.

The fries? Well, they need some work.

Pepper steak

My friend got the cajun steak ($36), which as you might imagine tasted straight out of New Orleans and has a nice bang to it. I'll definitely give it a whirl next time I go if I can overcome my urge not to again go down pepper steak road.

For dessert, we had this, which had some crazy name, which I can't recall.  Those familiar with Shallot's Strawberry Shortcake may see a resemblance, but unfortunately this isn't in that league.  Don't get me wrong, it was something I'd order again, but given the resemblance, my expectations were a bit too high.

All in all, I'd rank the Loft pretty darn high, but it loses a few points for being in Boropark (which isn't as central as NYC), but gains those points right back considering the reasonableness of the price of sushi and the appetizers (which wouldn't be as reasonable if it were NYC).

Four appetizers, two steaks, and a dessert, with tax and tip, came out to be $85 p/p.  Pretty economical for the type of restaurant it is.

Definitely give it a shot.
