Whoops. Meant $28. Had it last night

Yup $28 sounds right, or $14 for the lonely ravioli.

I don't get the hype. High prices, small portions, and poor service. I'd take Noi Due any day.

I do like the basil fries and I loved the hole in one challah french toast though.

I hear you to an extent. Prices are high, but Noi Due is not really cheaper. Portions some are more generous and some are less, the Fritto Misto ($16) for one is a good value. Pastas are all great, but small portions and expensive.

Went tonight and it was awesome. I don't think I ever spent so much on food (or tip so well) but it was definitely worth it. Great food (although a small menu, which could be because they make the food at your table), very entertaining, and overall a nice environment. And I also got the tempura ice cream for free. I thought it was very good.
Does it require reservation ? Is it a quiet environment or noisy ?

I find (CMIIW) Noi Due portions to be larger and cheaper and I've always had excellent service there.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Service can be an issue at Basil, will admit that.. For the most part, the servers are very pleasant and friendly.

I did not make a reservation and didn't have any problems. The environment isn't loud but definately not quiet.
But the reason is because the chefs make a whole show, with banging, singing (if you want to call it that) and so on.

I advise to definitely  have a reservation if going with a group as there are only 4 or 5 tables I believe. If going as party of 2 I'd also call it in but either way you would be seated with a mixed cord upon availability.

Hm. The ice cream is the one thing I really didn't like. AAMOF (As a matter of fact) no one at the table enjoyed it. Otherwise I agree.

Went to Kasai last night. It's a lot of fun! Food is good but you can't go back too often because there isn't really that much variety. Definitely recommended though. It's probably better is you're part of a large group (8 people). If not, they sit you with other people.

It's much much better than the brisket IMO. Not nearly as many spices.

Has anyone been to Chagall Bistro?

Any restaurants in the immediate crown heights area, besides Basil, BB, and Izzy's?

Grilled london broil was fantastic

Kasai in a few words? Fun, savory, and awesome.

After landing in JFK from our most recent trip, we thought we'd cap it off with a nice meal at a Brooklyn restaurant, something we don't often get the opportunity to do considering the distance from us. We had heard good things about Kasai, and after speaking with a friend who had been to confirm the rumors, we set a reservation for 9:20 PM.

We arrived about 9:25 PM and were seated promptly. Now, this isn't your usual dining experience. Instead of being seated by yourselves, there is what I would call "communal dining." Some people will love it, others will hate it. We loved it, though it obviously depends who your co-diners happen to be, and the chemistry between everyone. For us, it just worked.

There are 8 seats surrounding a large hibachi grill. When we arrived, another couple had already been seated, and we, in turn, were seated right across from the chef. Before the chef began, another couple came, so it was 6 in total for this "show/dinner."

It did take a little too long for the "show" to start (I guess the owner was waiting for someone else to fill out the table?), but during that time, the waiter came by and took our orders. I started off with the trio fruit sake: one lychee, one fuji apple, and one white peach. Delicious.

We also ordered the YAKI CHICKEN GYOZA ($15) and EDAMAME ($7). The Edamame was unfortunately just that--emamame with salt. Nothing unique, nothing different. Skip.

The Gyoza, on the other hand, was wow. Fantastic. It came served steaming hot (though not made/cooked before us), the texture was divine, and the sauce was a total complement. (If I *had* to quibble, I would wish there was a bit more meat inside each one). But: a must get.

First up on the grill was the rice. And, what a way to start. With a huge bang. (You can see how it's prepared in the video below.) Second to only the Vietnamese Rice in HKG, this rice was imbued with character, depth, and flavor. It's served with every main dish as far as I could tell. Thank your lucky stars for that.

For our mains, we got a HIBACHI SAMURAI STEAK ($35) and HIBACHI PRIME RIB EYE STEAK / BONELESS ($42). Both were bursting with flavor, cooked wonderfully, and served, as is usual at a hibachi place, piping fresh and steaming hot. If I had to pick one, I'd say prime rib, but Mrs. AJK would say samurai.  The other side was grilled veggies, and they, too, did not disappoint. Another good complement to the dish.

And the steaks are served with two sauces, depicted below, one of which is called "yummy, yummy sauce." While I made a joke that that name was a wee bit presumptuous, it should have been called "heaven, heaven sauce." It was delightful. I forget what he said the ingredients were, but I think he said "fruity mayonnaise" or some other such weird concoction. I didn't care; it was, as I said, awesome and didn't taste like "fruit mayo" to me. The other sauce also was very good, but forgot the name.

For dessert, we got TEMPURA ICE CREAM ($13) and it was average. Lotta fried stuff, not enough ice cream. By no means bad, but it's not memorable.

Oh, just before I forget, one of our co-diners suggested we do Sake bombs before the food came, which we did.  After the meal, we were presented with the bill for the bombs, but we were shmoozing with the owner and he kindly offered those on the house.  Nice gesture, indeed.

With the food review out the way, this is more than just a restaurant; it's an experience. Below are some pics from the show, with a video of the beginning. Again, like all important things, I can imagine the show being quite polarizing (the chef at one point tosses rice clumps at the guests' mouths, and if you catch, and sometimes even if not, you're rewarded with flowing sake from a ketchup bottle being squirted from 3-5 feet away (I was rewarded off video ;)) and there is a "peeing boy" who shoots oil or water on the grill), but we definitely came out on the enamored segment of that scale.

A blurry pic of the peeing boy (sorry, took pic with my phone and wasn't expecting it so couldn't focus properly):

And finally a video of the first 2 or so mins.

Bottom line, the place is not necessarily "cheap" (my bill was about $160 which included mandatory % tip (not cool)) but it deserves a visit. If you're uncomfortable by the group seating, put off by the peeing boy, or apprehensive about being able catch small rice clumps with your mouth in front of strangers, well, I think that's more of a reflection on you than the restaurant. Show was fun and lighthearted. And most important? The food was tasty. Will definitely go back.

P.S. I caught my rice clump on the second try (as you can see in the video when the people cheer). First one was a bad throw :P

By me, he was flipping pieces of zucchini. Caught 2 out of 3. Not bad. Probably easier than rice.
