I just went to one in Flatbush on Coney and I to J. I thougt it was called Schnitzys. First time, excellent.

They don't have cole slaw. IMHO you can't have a schnitzel sandwich without cole slaw!

FYI, Bagels and Greens on Coney Island Avenue is also really good. Can be crowded as well. Not the cheapest, though.

+1

Although I liked their old menu better.

Update on Sunflower. Still excellent. Had the vegetable soup - out of site and boy what a portion! My wife had the omelet wrap and I had the Israel Panini. Just plain delicious. Then the capuccino and the caramel decaf were really good as well. My only complaint - no heat in the store!

Tried out Cafe K's new meat restaurant Gourmet K @ 1267 Coney Island Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11230.

I didn't go for the decor of the place- has a bit of unfinished feel. Not an unfinished look, which I happen to like. But rather I feel like the roof and walls (think bamboo ceiling, exposed brick and heavy red and gold brocade) don't really come together so pleasantly... The noise level was very high.

The food was pretty good. Best part of my meal was the coconut dream appetizer- tender, soft and moist chicken strips on skewers, grilled and dipped into a coconut sauce with hot and sweet undertones. The taste was subtle and well balanced.

Then corn soup which comes with a bit of avocado salad floating in it as a garnish. The soup was nothing special, and I thought the guacamole was a bit too lemony and contrasted to heavily with the sweetness of the soup.

Mon Amour salad was very nice- endives, peaches, and walnuts in a balasamic dressing. Although, I thought the dressing was a bit too strong and vinegary for such delicate flavors- but still it was very good.

Main was cornish hen with fig couscous. The vegetables that were cooked with the hen were delicious, mini bulb onion, carrot and I think celery. The chicken was pretty nice too, soft and tender- although the whole little chicken on a plate in front of me did weird me out. I was a bit disappointed that the fig couscous used dried figs, as fresh are so much more flavorful. But it was still very good.

Dessert was peanut butter mousse (I think it's the same as the one they serve at Cafe K.) which was good, and an hot apple tart, comes with a scoop of ice cream, and surrounded by fresh strawberry slices. I liked the apple tart quite a bit, but it was too sweet and I couldn't finish it.

What I found strange is that the waiters, although quite polite, never once asked us how the meal was.

All in all, it was a quite nice experience.

How much did the whole meal cost per person?

Two people shared the meal above- total $100

The prices are pretty much as follows:

The appetizers run at around $15
Soups are $8
Salads around $15
Mains $25-50
Desserts $10-15

Lack of heat seems to be common.

Just went to gourmet k. Had the meet me appetizer was very good. Had the hanger steak which wasn't great. And the chicken with mushrooms which is basically a chicken Marsala and that was very good. For dessert had the tiramisu and that was not bad. I would recommend it but would rather go to any restaurant in manhattan for same price.

I don't get it. Why is a restaurant in Manhattan automatically better and worth the spend?

Usually people spend more when they want to "go out" and not just for a meal. if you want a night out, going around the corner doesn't cut it for a lot of people. Going into the city adds to the experience.

Isn't Crown Heights part of Brooklyn? Why aren't the CH places listed?

I hear. But with all that, there are lots of places in Manhattan that aren't worth the extra spend. If you are going for the a "night out" I would either go really cheap or really high-end. The in between places in Manhattan are too expensive to be worth it.
