Short Checking Bags Domestically (when doing hidden city ticketing)

Anyone have any experience short checking bags domestically with UA? For example JFK-CLE-MIA and asking them to check to CLE. What if someone wanted to give the bag to a friend in CLE for some reason?

It depends how long the stop is for - if it is for more than a few hours (which is always safer with hidden cities) then you can tell them you are visiting someone on the stopover and you have something for them..... Worked for me!

Hmmm... my layover is only 30 mins...not too plausible. Why is it always better to have a large layover with hidden city ticketing?

It can be done. Just ask at check in.

Much tougher. If the agent is worth his salt, he'll either ask you directly, or suspect. Both not good.

Just worried if I say that someone else is going to pick up the bag for me at the baggage claim they might say that's not allowed because they don't have the claim check...

1) They should not let you check in baggage for part of the way if you only have a 30min layover. Sorry...

2) IME with hidden cities (and ive done them alot) if you have a short layover they will sometimes want to reroute you in order that you should get to your final destination..

Delta gave huge issues with this IME ... They actually went ballistic and the gate agent in LAS claimed it was illegal.

Does it make it any better if it's an award ticket? I'm thinking they won't suspect it being a hidden city ticket (in my case it is because I wanted to change my destination without paying a fee- so I made a hidden city instead).
