Paste values into cells formatted as needed. I do that all the time.
Do you mean Paste Special > Values?

Either way, I often download and reupload via an Excel plugin

Excel? There are three workarounds that I know of. To format as text, to format as a zip, to add a ' before.

Yeah, but workarounds are still workarounds. When importing and exporting between databases and excel, it adds a step every time.

I guess you can't blame anyone; when they made up zip codes, computers weren't even invented yet (probably).
What would happen if I do a mailing and the zip code starting with a 0 is just replace with a4 digit zip. I imagine it would get to the same place.
e.g. you think 3456 is different than 03456?

Fortunately, USPS won't deliver a letter to South Africa without appropriate postage, which you're unlikely to have paid if you intended your letter to go to Lakewood.

Especially if you write:

It will get there without any zip or with a wrong one but is likely to take longer and be less reliable.

USPS will return if zip code is missing or wrong. Doesn't matter what you put as name of city, they just look at at the zip

I once got a letter that was sent to the wrong zip (albeit one that's nearby, so maybe that's why it came)

Talking about zip codes, I'd add one. Why do I have to enter city and state on every form I fill out on the web, can't they just have a feature that I can fill in the zip and it does the rest on its own?  >:(

(Few, but very few, websites do have the feature.)

Amex apps only need to fill out zip and it populates the rest.

Amex apps are worse. They make up a place that you live that you have to erase.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

And why in the world do they give you a dropdown for states when you would otherwise only have to type two letters???

Especially annoying if you live in a state where another state begins with the same letter and is earlier on the list.

Equal issue with years. Sometimes i gotta do alot of scrolling to get to my birthdate.

It would be just as easy to check if the state entered is valid.

Many zip codes contain more than one city.
If you don't care why would you comment?

-2 The code for a drop down list is relatively simple. To check an entry against a list is more compl;icated

Bad luck. You were born on a bad date...  :P
But I feel for you, I'm also toward the end of the month.  :)
