Using the word Spouse when wife or husband will work.
I understand using 'spouse' when you're making a generic statement. "Good communication with your spouse is a bedrock of a good marriage."
But when you're reviewing a coat on Amazon, "They sent a women's 1X instead of the one I ordered for my spouse, so it doesn't fit him." Bleh!  Husband! Husband!

I’ve understood it to mean purely male lineage.
