Open Command Prompt (or Run) and enter this:
shutdown -s -t #
with # being the number of seconds you want the computer to shut down after.
Alt + F4, is a bit easier ;)

(It is the shortcut to close the current application, if they are all closed/minimized then it closes windows)

Which reminds me of pet peeve #32: Lenovo not being smart enough that when I press Alt + another key I don't need the brightness or volume lowered. Why do I need to also hold the function key (which is mapped to the Ctrl key..)?

I once had a laptop which had a setting somewhere to toggle which set of commands needed the fn key pressed. I don't remember details but it might be worth googling.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

There is an option to switch between having the function keys default or not, but nothing else unfortunately

Yeah iirc it's all or nothing.

Might want to see if you can hack something together with autohotkey. Or buy an external keyboard that has separate keys for volume etc.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

It doesn't turn off the computer - it brings up the shutdown menu. He was
talking about when the shutdown menu's options have been changed:
Also, when the computer doesn't give you an option to shut down without updating. Most times it gives an option, but not always.

Another way is to have your power button set to turn off the computer when pressed (and I don't mean the
held-down instant-off), but I prefer not having to avoid an immediate-shutdown button when plugging in USBs.

Don't think autohotkey would work, didn't delve to deeply in trying that though.
Definitely not worth an extra keyboard, I don't use it that often.

My workaround
I use powertoys Keyboard Manager tool to remap it. The F4 key is the toggle to mute the mic and that's not mappable, so I F3/Volume Up and that works.

Correct it brings up the shutdown menu but it shouldn't update when using that menu.

Pet peeve: restaurant (fast food/deli) saying online and over the phone that they're open till 11, with no mention of the kitchen closing earlier. You get there before 11 and they tell you to pound sand.

Bigger pet peeve: when they tell you that hey the kitchen closed at 10:45, sorry not sorry. I pointed out that ummmmm, it's 10:40. A lot of good it did me.

I have my power button hibernate for that reason. I only turn off completely once a week. Though my power button is on the keyboard.

It does. The computer I'm using is actually doing it now:

And by the time it arrives, the kitchen is closed. So you're left with food that you ordered and can't eat. The refund won't help.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

When a driver who is busy texting fails to notice that the cars in front of him have already started passing through the green light. After the third honk, he finally starts to go, only to be faced with a red light (when there would have been plenty of time for you to get through had he started right away). He then runs the red light.

Sounds highly specific? Third time it happened this week. (Not the same driver, but the same light.)

it's worse when they get upset at you and do it on purpose as if you did something wrong for waking them up.

When you tell me to call you, I do, you don’t pick & all I get is “the person you are trying to reach has a mailbox which has not been set up” or “has a mailbox that’s full”.
And you still have the nerve to get upset at me why I didn’t call ??
Seriously ? Come on!!

Interesting. What about if you hold down shift before F4?

(Was that deliberate?)
You can fix the result by using Task Manager to restart Windows Explorer.

When someone replaces one light bulb in a fixture (or one fixture in a room) with a different color temperature than the others.
