When a Sefer says שם for pages, until you find which דף or סימן it's referencing.

Oh, so Ibid is שם's English name. I wonder how they chose that as the equivalent :P, it doesn't have any of the same letters????

Thanks for that. I just read the most recent entry on the site (5 months old) and found it quite amusing.

From Wiktionary:

meant
simple past tense and past participle of mean

mean
(transitive, usually in passive) To intend (something) for a given purpose or fate; to predestine. [from 16th c.]
[Example:] Actually this desk was meant for the subeditor.
The second meaning of meant is when referring to objects that were intended for someone or something. Not when people should have been doing something. That's the distinction I think.

*cough cough*

The meaning in the use you objected to is that someone had intended for the party in question to do something.

I read her first book years ago. After finding out yesterday that there's a new one, I put a hold on it at my local public library.

Not exactly, though. No one intended for the hat to actively climb onto someone's head. The hat is meant to be placed (passive verb) on your head. You are supposed to put (active verb) it on your head.

Those were meant to be separate. The first point was that according to this,
The second meaning of meant is when referring to objects that were intended for someone or something.
the earlier example you had given of problematic use was incorrect.

Then, I thought you meant, by
Not when people should have been doing something.
that you were objecting to the use of "meant" in statements such as "Joe was meant to bring it yesterday."
"Someone had intended for the party in question to do something" was a response to that.

Are you still maintaining that "meant" in your hat example was a valid example of incorrect use?

Yes. It was not meant to go on your head. Hats don't go anywhere on their own. It was meant to be placed on your head (passive verb).
It works with people to. Children are meant to be sent to bed when they are tired. They are supposed to listen when their parents tell them to go to sleep.

The distinction (I think) is whether it's an active verb / action that someone was supposed to do, vs a passive verb where someone (who is not mentioned) is supposed to be doing something to something else (like someone putting a hat on a head). The hat is meant to be placed on your head, it isn't meant for putting on feet. In other words, hats are meant for keeping heads warm, not feet.

Citation, please.

It was not "meant to go on your head."

...

The hat is meant to be placed on your head.

I don't think that's how that works (or that "to go," in reference to an object, implies that it goes by itself).

That first example wasn't such a good one. But here's where it's coming from:
"Mr hat, you are meant to go on a head" -> wrong
"Mr person, your hat is meant to be placed on your head" -> right

Based on the amount of times Lurker liked that post, I would be inclined to ask him if he ever stole packages off Mark Rober's porch...

My current preschooler has had an Israeli teacher for the last 2 years who believes every project needs glitter. Thanks to Purim, everyone in my house has glitter on them right now. Let's just say his peeve post hit me at the right time.
