will the gv # be the equivalent of calling a local # from that area.
right now its a local 732 number if i transfer it to gv will it still remain a local #  - for me on a new local only plan to dial in or someone else who has only local calling ......

With gv you pick your number, so if you pick a 732 then it will be local

no, because you will switch numbers, but you might be able to choose a local one

The OP is talking about porting the number, i.e. the number will remain the same.  I don't know for a fact, but I would assume if your 732 exchange (first three numbers) is local now, it would remain local after the port to GV.  This does not have a lot to do with GV's service as they are only leasing the numbers.

I just reread the OP.  You said two things - 'port', and a few posts later said 'transfer'...What are you trying to accomplish.  Are you 'porting' your number (canceling Verizon, and moving the same number to GV)?  Or are you simply forwarding your calls that come in on your Verizon number to GV?  If the latter, then what will determine if a call is local is only dependent on the first part of the call.
For example, if A (someone else) calls B (you on Verizon).  B then forwards to C (GV).  If A and B are both local, then C can be anywhere (as far as A is concerned).

Yes, you can do that.  You would need to port your current number to GV.  Then get a new number with Verizon, sign up with lifeline (make sure to disable LD, to prevent accidental billing), and then fwd the GV number to lifeline.  For LD calling from your Verizon number, setup your cordless home phone to program your GV number, then pause, then *, then your pin, then pause, then *, then 2 (for LD calls).  Then all you would need to do is speeddial that number to make a LD call.

i ported my number to pp but when i tried porting to gv i get this message  "Porting your mobile number to Google Voice is unavailable
Your mobile number can not be ported at this time.
- We currently don't support porting from your carrier. We apologize and are working on adding support for more carriers

any ideas?

I did not catch what you had said in OP until I read this post.  Why did you go from home-pp-gv?  Why not home-gv?

I have never tried, nor looked into it. Can you have a basic pp service (or port somewhere else, and do what am about to suggest) and call forward all calls that come in to your pp number to you gv number.  I have done this a number of times (granted, not with pp) and it has worked fine.
