Amazon charging more for Prime 1 day and Saturday shipping!

Just tried to order a car seat on Amazon and wanted it shipped next day. As a Prime member, i was expecting the normal 4 dollar charge. But it showed up as 16. An Amazon rep stated "We recently changed the price of One-Day Shipping and Saturday Delivery for Amazon Prime members.Pricing now varies based on the item's size and weight."

For me, this is a HUGE devaluation of Prime membership.

In the olden days, you were able to overnight a 200 pound item for 4 bucks. They lost a lot of money. Been this way for while.

FWIU amazon doesn't pay per package.  They negotiate a set amount for as many packages as they want to ship. 

For example,  Amazon gives UPS  $5mm in the beginning of the year,  which in turn buys them the rights to ship as many packages as they want.  (didn't really word that right,  but you get the point)

whats hard to believe? I'm not saying its true, I don't know, but its not hard to understand, it makes more sense than paying separately for each package.

If they are able to ship as many packages as they want for the prepaid amount then why aren't they using only one company to do all their shipping?

Any decent company knows not to put all eggs in one basket. Amazon had their DHL lesson.

Does anyone have the same experience? In my past like 5 orders. I always got next day delivery, even though it's supposedly only 2-day delivery for free.

Total YMMV. They're guaranteeing 2 day, but it often takes less time. I'd say getting 5 in a row like that is just coincidence.

You've probably been ordering popular items, which amazon will usually have stocked up in their nearby distribution center.
