Does this affect anyone here directly?
My brother can't get to Yeshivah because his renewed passport isn't being mailed out.

It's true of all pension systems
For private companies, states, cities or municipalities it's illegal to this.

BAsed on the various options on the exchange, I found a health insurance plan that would cost my 4-member family over $14k a month.

What people dont realize is that the 'bronz' plan, which is the cheapest, is not really cheap at all. You need to pay 40% (!!!) of your medical bills through co-pays and other fees. Obamacare is one big lie.

I am happy the Republicans finally stood up to these socialists.

When a pension is set up, reserves are held in safe investments to pay future liabilities. If those reserves prove to be insufficient, the company that set up the pension is still on the hook for any shortfall. The risk to the company is minimized in the same way as other life and annuity products - by pooling it among the participants - which is why those are all considered actuarial fields.

The difference with social security is that the 'reserves' for the pension are incoming tax revenues and to a lesser extent interest from treasuries being held for social security.

+1 You missed just one important point: Participants in a defined benefit pension plan make no contributions, ever.

Not really relevant. If you take away the pension, all else being equal, the salary will be higher, or some other benefit will make up for it.

ETA: Not to mention the fact that the term pension includes both defined benefit and defined contribution plans.

One interesting point:
Before the sequesteration went into effect, the gov't and the media scared us all to death, if that happens, the US will never be the same.
Fast fwd, 6 months later, we all live and laugh.
Not that nobody was affected, but still, its not the end of the world.

Same story happened with the gov't shutdown, "if the gov't shuts down, we'll go back into recession! the entire US government will freeze! bla bla bla!
And... after two weeks: nothing devastating.

Now comes the debt ceiling debate...
Okay, that's totally different! If we don't raise the debt limit, the markets will be in panic, we'll lose our credibility, the financial system will collapse!...
Now I see some republican senators changed tone, saying the world will not come to an end... All what's going to happen is the gov't will not spend more than it takes in, aka balanced budget...

Wonder if they're right.
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

Doesn't sound like it. The bond markets will be thrown into turmoil. Remember what happened last time the us was downgraded? It'll much worse this time

For those who don't know the reference, the bottom pic is Roy from The IT Crowd, which is a hilarious British comedy that ran for several seasons a few years back. A running joke in the show is that no matter what the call is about the IT guys always ask, 'Have you tried turning it off and on again?" (you can check out a youtube compilation here - the pic is from the first clip) It was Chris O'Dowd's first significant role, and since then he's been in a several small roles in bigger movies, most notably the cop in Bridesmaids.
