+1. Based on post history, @Yef seems to have a strong interest in convincing Bingo to stay out of the 5T area.
I would actually appreciate them coming here. Competition is always good and I mentioned I shop there sometimes when in Brooklyn. I just don’t like that people bash GG all the time for nothing. This guy Sammyp was yelling at then for charging for bags and boxes, when every supermarket in ny is doing the exact same thing.
Gourmet is  awesome store, a little more expensive yes but you get what you pay for. Every time I go to bingo or krm o walk out with a headache. Packed, rundown, no customer service.
That’s all I got to say.

The biggest Chessed would be to lower their prices! Forcing us to pay money so they can support the community is Sanders style.

I would like this 1000 times.

I've said this in the past upthread, it's very nice they sponsor the "pesach rebbaim campaign" and all the various dor l'dor programs but why do they do that on everyone else's backs?

I heard a rumor that the local shuls are closing. Can anyone confirm?

Not all the shuls:

Dear Friends

Many Rabbis in our community spent several hours last night considering the question of our shuls remaining open during this tumultuous time. We examined the issue from the perspective of the expert doctors in the field of infectious diseases from our local hospital systems (who were present), our poskim (who were there throughout the duration of the meeting) and with the heavy responsibility of the welfare of every one of our dear mispallelim in mind. We are writing to inform you that we have made the excruciating decision that our shuls will be closed for all services, shiurim, classes, children's and adult's programming effective today, Friday, March 13th, until further notice. We recognize and respect the decision of other neighborhood shuls in taking a different course of action.

We recognize the importance of our institution to the lives of our members of all ages. It is heartbreaking for us to have to come to this difficult decision, and it was made after days and hours of very careful deliberation. New reports this morning concerning the nature of communal spread, have contributed to our painful decision.

Because the situation is fluid, we will reevaluate these decisions on a regular and on-going basis. We will communicate with you as changes take place. Please take these days as a critical opportunity to intensify your prayers that all those who are not well, will be healed and that our community will be shielded from any further harm.

Let us together rise to the challenge of these difficult times and ensure that the most vulnerable in our community are well looked after and taken care of. Let us all actively pray for a speedy resolution to this pandemic.

We must try our best to stay home with only our immediate family and avoid unnecessary contact with others, and particularly avoid contact with substantial groups. We should only leave home when it is truly necessary. Thus:

We implore our members not to attend other minyanim and not form private minyanim in households. This will undermine our communal effort to stop the spread of coronavirus. Our Rabbis will lead by example and daven alone in their private homes.

All community members are strongly encouraged to work from home, if possible, and to stay home whenever possible.

People should not have gatherings for Shabbos meals.

We recommend our members use restaurants for take out only.

Sick and Shivah visits should be conducted by telephone or video calls. Shiva minyanim will not be meeting. The Avel should try to arrange for someone to recite kaddish on their behalf.

Funerals should be restricted to a graveside service with a small group of family members and a minyan.

We recommend minimizing Smachos to family and small amounts of guests and not attending large Smachos. Weddings (kiddushin) should not be canceled. The party should be limited or planned for a later date.

While the local Mikvaos will remain open, women under mandatory quarantine or who are experiencing symptoms may not use the Mikvah. Please feel free to call with any questions.

As you can see, these represent significant changes to our lives and many detailed questions will certainly emerge. The brief outline above cannot guide every particular situation. We will have to address each circumstance as it comes up based on professional expertise and religious guidance.

We recommend everyone take in Shabbos at least 5 minutes early this week and say Tehillim 91 and 142 as a zechus for our protection.

It is our deep and sincere hope that this unparalleled decision brings safety and health to our community. We are closing because social distancing is critical to preventing the spread of COVID-19. We urge all of you to do what you can to prevent the spread of this disease. Older individuals and those with underlying medical conditions should remain at home. Everyone should continue to vigorously wash hands with soap, and cover properly while sneezing and coughing.

It is our hope and prayer that our physical distance from one another will ultimately bind us to each other in our hearts, and inspire us to better appreciate the spiritual bond that we share.

We pray for a speedy recovery for all who are not well, and continued strength and vitality, spiritual and material success for all.

Wishing you a Shabbos of good health, introspection and happiness!

Changing by the minute!!!!

Erev Shabbos Parshas Ki Sisa

Dear Parents,

There are some possible new developments in our community which may necessitate a change of approach at Yeshiva Darchei Torah.

A small number of local adults are being tested for COVID-19 due to symptoms that they are experiencing.

Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt, an assistant rav at the Young Israel of Woodmere and a renowned infectious disease specialist, who has been an authority in our decisions on this matter, has advised all local shuls to close until the situation is clarified.

I spoke to Maran Rav shmuel Kamenetsky shlita a few minutes ago, who told me to follow Rabbi Dr. Glatt’s guidance.

This Shabbos, it is likely that our local community shuls will be closed. Yeshiva Darchei Torah, including all its divisions, form nursery through Kollel, will be closed this coming Sunday and Monday, during which time we will be cleaning and disinfecting our buildings from top to bottom. By Monday night, we will Im Yirtzeh Hashem be updating you as to next steps.

Our Rashi-Mishnayos celebration, scheduled for Sunday, will be rescheduled. PTA conferences are cancelled.

Please reassure your children that Hashem is in control and that all will turn out well.

I just want to express my feelings of support for those who have simchos in town this Shabbos. Im Yirtzeh Hashem you will see many years of nachas from all of your wonderful families.

Most importantly, please remember to have in mind all those who are now living in fear because of their medical conditions. Let us try to be “nosei b’ol” with them in this challenging time.

I would like to suggest that everyone - men, women and children - set aside time on a daily basis to say Perek 142 in Tehillim with real kavana. May Hashem cause this mageifah to disappear quickly.

Let us hope and daven that all of the suspected cases turn out to be false alarms.

Have a great Shabbos, stay healthy, and may we see the geulah sheleimah b'karov.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yaakov Bender

you really should stay home.

That was not my question.

However, I am from those people whom believe Hashem still wants us to daven and learn. I am a follower of Reb Chaim Kanievvsky who recommends keeping all Batei Medrash open. He wouldn't budge even when the government and health officials came ti his house to home and tried to get him to change his mind.

In Brooklyn, when they have an confirmed case, they close the shul to disinfect, then reopen. Far Rockaway closed all shuls as a result of some people showing symptoms. So far, the tests are coming back negative, and the shuls are still closed.

When all the stores switch to delivery only, then I will start to daven at home.

This entire Chrono thing is majorly hyped up and exaggerated by the media. It's true it is real, but not the way they make it out to be. We're all gonna get it anyways at some point. Most of us wont even know we have it though.

We are days away from the hospitals being overwhelmed like happened in Italy

This is mostly true but in the meantime, how many people will you infect who set off a chain reaction and hurt or kill people that are seriously at risk?

Not commenting on shuls being closed, but just want to explain that even though most of us will end up infected at some point, the goal now is to spread the infections out so that the medical system doesn't collapse, and the best way to do that is through social distancing. Therefore, your claim that "we're all gonna get it anyways at some point" is the best argument for staying home.

Interesting perspective from rabbi Frankel below:

An open letter to our community:
Why is Agudath Israel of the Five Towns still open?

זכר ה' מה היה לנו הביטה וראה את חרפתנו

Before I begin let me make some important disclaimers.
1. I am not in any way possible, criticizing anyone's decision to close their shul. All of the rabbanim who acted dealt with the issue that was in front of them and acted responsibly for their kehilla.
2. The thoughts presented apply exclusively to the unique situation of Agudath Israel of the Five Towns and no other Agudah.
3. If your doctor tells you to stay home, stay home.
4. I am speaking to my kehilla to explain my thoughts out loud.
5. I am not going to debate this with anyone, not online, not on the phone. Harassing me with articles and letters will accomplish nothing. I won’t respond.

I remember a time in the distant past when it was considered a unique distinction that a person attended shul three times a day.

Today, due to the elevated standards of our community and its nobility this has actually become the most wonderful norm. Shuls are packed three times a day, from early morning to late at night. It became as basic as eating kosher. This for many years has remained one of the most beautiful aspects of our neighborhood.
The power of our תפלה is our strength and essence. הקול קול יעקב. It is our survival!!
If this is not who we are we are nothing.

We are now being asked to shut it all down over this sakana. So let's think this through.

How important are my tefillos b’tzibur? Krias HaTorah? Amen yeheh shmei rabba, etc.?

As I travel around the neighborhood I see restaurants still open. Stores still open, long lines, packed with customers. Long Island Railroad operating, etc., etc.
I was at a doctor's office this week and the entire waiting room was full and the office was fully staffed.
How is this possible. What happened to the sakana?

Silly rabbi. The answer, of course, is that these are or claim to be essential services! You can’t close the doctor's office! People need to eat. Some people must travel to work. They can’t afford to lose their income.
Of course, if someone was to have tested positive we would quickly sanitize the area and reopen as quickly as possible.

Rabbosai: ESSENTIAL SERVICES FOR B”NEI YISRAEL ARE OUR M”KOMOS HATEFILLA.

Kochi is essential and our tfilos are secondary? My friends, look at what has happened to us.
My late father in law would relate how, in the camps, at times, as they finished shmoneh esreh someone was dead at their feet. Let that speak for itself.
While I clearly understand the concern I am astounded at much of what is going on. Some churches and mosques remain open while we are being harassed to close.

As I look outside and as I look inside I see that the Borai Olam is still around. He, not anyone else, will decide when the Agudah closes. If He wants us closed He knows how to do it.

Until then, we are open for business as usual.
Mincha today is 6:45 PM. Shacharis tomorrow morning is 6:15 AM

Rabbi Yitzchok D. Frankel
