It's not the YQ. It's the departure tax, which is higher...
So RT would be more then triple surcharges over ow

Yup from LHR to anywhere in the USA you will pay with every airline $185+
Then the airlines that add a yq you will pay that as well

+1 aka British pirates fee.
That's why it could make sense to take an LCC to CDG and fly back to the US from there if it could mean saving a few hundred.

I picked up two of these cards last year and earned 186K miles.

I just booked 5 RT flights MSP to MBJ for 175K miles. Those tickets price out on google flights for $923/each. These are nice nonstop Delta flights. The cheapest flight with stops on the days of my trip would have been $876. So 90K gets me over a $2K value.

Also, one nice benefit of using VA for Delta flights is I can cancel for only a $50 fee, whereas Delta has no cancel option. (One of us may not be able to go, so this is a cheap way to lock in the flight.)

They also seemed to have messed up the trip in some way to my benefit and only took out 140K miles.  I have all 5 tickets and have selected seats for them on Delta. I think VA possibly did a manual adjustment because I also had a lap child, so maybe they thought they were charging miles for that and then took off the 35K? I don't know. Fees were also about $100 less than they would have been on Delta as well. So I don't know why but I came out really well on this trip.

I live in MSP so Delta flights often come out to be much more valuable to me than AA or United. I have been able to use great availability on non-stop Mexican trips as well. I should note that AirFrance can book Delta trips as well and they take 5K RT less miles to Mexico/Carib, but I find their fees are also $50 more, so it is a bit of a wash.
