Samsung Refrigerators
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:50:40 PM »
Recently purchased one of these, but can't figure out how to shut the light off for shabbos use.  Anyone have any idea?  The model # is rf217acpn.  Any insight would be appreciated.  TIA

Did you buy it from a yiddishe place?  Call them.
Otherwise,  I'm sure  I am stating the obvious, but does it have a button that gets pushed in when you close the door?  Or does it use sensors?  If the former, tape it up.

notanonymous beat me to it, but

a)You can take out the bulb each week. Page 30 in the manual.

b) you can tape the button down or use the  http://www.amazon.com/ShabboSwitch-Refrigerator-Switch-Slider-Shabbos/dp/B000IFWMSK
It works well.  They come in 2-packs also.

With all the electronics in today's appliances, many come with a 'Shabbos mode' that makes sure nothing can get electrically activated on shabbos.  My fridge has a Shabbos mode, but I called the company and they said if I hold the door switch down it basically replicates the shabbos mode, so I guess I don't have sensors (or something).

Thanks for the advice but the problem is that for the life of me I can't find a button. Any idea where it might be?

I checked out it's manual again.  I can't find a button either!  You may have to take out the bulb each week (or leave it out?)

Go back to the showroom where you bought it and ask them, especially if they have this model on the floor.

(You may be in trouble and have electronic sensors, but I don't know anything about that.)

If I can just remove the bulb, why would I be in trouble if there are sensors?

I'm afraid you might.
If you bought it in a Jewish place, they would know.  Even if not, go into a Jewish place and ask them about your model number.  Ask about sensors and Shabbos use.
Good luck!

For example in my fridge when the door opens the LCD panel showing the coolness setting turns on. Using a shabbos switch to tape down the button fixes that but you should def call a frum appliance store to find out what you need to do for this model to make sure nothing is turned on by opening the door.

Check your manual, doesn't it have a Shabbos mode?

I checked his manual.  It has no shabbos mode, and no button to tell the fridge when the door is open.  Chances are, there are sensors that recognize and open door.
peroneustertius, you're gonna have to talk with a frum person(or knows about shabbos) about how this fridge works and if it's a problem for Shabbos.

If there are sensors, but the only thing the sensors due is control the light, it may not be a problem.  However, it is likely (at least possible) that there is an alarm that goes off if the door is open for a certain period of time.

Let me clarify: "it may not be a problem" with the bulb removed.

My samsung fridge has a temperature bar that lights up, don't think it's feasible to take the bulb out of that.

here is what you do for the fridge part---Buy powerful magnets from HD and put them above the spot that has the magnet connector.
Here is a pic--hope that helps

Sounds nifty.  What does the magnet do?

classically one would assume there is a button that get pushed in to tell the light that the door is closed---but on these there is just a pair of magnets--one on the frame and one in each door---
so when you put your own magnet on the fridge part--the fridge always thinks the door is closed--and lights dont turn on YAY

I like it.  I like the technology and the simple work around.

This may solve peroneustertius's light on Shabbos problem, but I think he should check if his sensors do anything else.
