looks like u may need to keep it active in the US for however long u travel to cover the must spend at least half time in the USA provision
Why?
That provision allows them to cancel you if you abuse it but you'll cancel anyway when you're home.

It isn't worth it for someone in Israel anyways. It's limited 2g data while you can get an ultra cheap unlimited 3g plan.
to text to the us from israel isnt free

So you'll use whatsapp or something else. Calling US is free, something you won't get with T-Mobile. That along with many other reasons why it makes sense for a student to get a local plan.

So is the right play here for A/S/V folks to just signup for T-Mobile before you travel abroad and cancel when you return?
Was planning on doing just that for my upcoming trip. Even a whole month (two weeks away and two weeks back) would only be $50, but I plan on cancelling before a month.

So I signed up for a Simple Choice plan for $50/mo.  They're having a sale on SIMs, so that cost me $0.99.  I told them 10 times I was planning on canceling within a month, which they said was ok, so long as I pay for the month I used.  I verified that the international texts and data are free, which they are.

Also, I just have a basic phone, so I won't be able to test out wifi anything.  I don't have an unlocked smartphone, but if someone knows of a cheap one I might consider it.  Also, even if I do get one, I'm not sure T-Mobile's wifi calling applies on all phones with wifi or only on their phones.

I'll let you know when I cancel how smoothly it goes.

Why don't you put your VZW on hold when your are not using it? You can do it for six months at a shot.

Keep us posted.
So I signed up for T-Mobile, went to Canada and South America, came back to the US, and cancelled all for $47. T-Mobile did not give me any issues when I asked to cancel 20 days after I signed up. It was very good experience.

I couldn't. The phone I had was a dumb phone so it would've been pointless. We used data over wifi on our smartphones.
