Cameras Keep Breaking

Any thoughts:  Among the cameras in my family, the lens body mechanism keeps breaking, usually after the 12 month warranty.  Recently happened with Panasonic and Canon.  I know:  AMEX.

Any suggestions for a decent point and shoot that doesn't break?  These have become almost disposable, but at $125+ for a decent camera, I ain't happy.

There are point and shoots that don't have lenses ther come out but you'll be sacrificing on picture quality.
