Extending the Life of AA miles

My wife has a bunch of AA miles that going to expire next month.  What is the best strategy for extending their life?  I could drop 2500 SPGs in there but would rather not if there is something better.

Getting a magazine for 300 miles will instantly extend her miles.

Can't say I have first hand experience but people seemed to be saying it posted that day with UA.

Perhaps one is instant and one takes a few days?

even with aa, if it doesnt post for a few days, when it does post, it posts from date of transaction thus reactivating miles that expired in the interim

just had the same problem.
spoke to aa on phone
they donated 500 miles of my account ( no idea to whom ) and instantly extended the miles till april 2015
