Letter from our Avreich:

Quote
Dearest DDF Family!

I cannot begin to express my gratitude and thanks for the outpouring of love which I see, I am humbled by my fellow DDF'ers who took it upon themselves to join the fundraising effort and help me in my time of need. It gladdens my heart to be part of such a family, who will go out of their way to help their fellows in need, whether it is financial or otherwise. I will be forever grateful to all of you, to those who donated the prizes, to those who donated money, and to those who made this a reality.

Thanks again!

What's this all about?
If you've been following this thread you may know that a longtime DDF'er who has a young family was arrested for being on the scene at the time of the sting operation.  Many of you have probably even met him in the real world. Several generous DDF'ers have donated prizes to be raffled off to bring attention to the defense fund created on his behalf.

It had nothing to do with signing a contract. And it has nothing to do with lawyers. It's common decency.

When one begins a raffle and sets a time,  one should keep to that time. And without the participants agreeing,  I don't see how it would be appropriate to change it.

Though not completely on topic,  I came across this article which espouses similar sentiments.

Technically it's more complicated than that. There was a story from a long time ago where there was a raffle and after the winner was picked they discovered that someone who was supposed to be in it didn't have a ticket in for him (or someone had 2 by mistake?). The halachic ruling given was that since he didn't have a chance to win (or had more chances than he was supposed to?) the entire raffle is invalidated.
See here and here and unrelated but very interesing and often relevant here
While I don't mind personally if it is pushed off, as I posted earlier it's pretty important to make sure everyone agrees (See here - the last website from my quote. )

Just curious - and please excuse my lack of understanding - what is the incentive here? Everyone else must double their donations unconditionally but you only have to double yours if 20 others do so first? How does that deal get people to double their donations? On the contrary, I believe if you doubled your donation right away and announced that you have done so, people will be inspired to follow suit. What am I missing?

That maybe he worded it wrong?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Many people gave $100 or less, while Dan gave close to $500. That means that if 20 people each double by giving another $36, $50 or $100 etc, their donation will cause a $500 donation from Dan effectively making them a causor (that's soo not a word) of an additional $25 donation per person of the 20.

That plus it will make $20K much more in reach making for a better grand prize and another prize added as well.

I've heard of a "match" - i.e. a donor will announce that he will match donations up to a certain amount, obligating himself to donate as much money as the others do combined. So theoretically, even if only one person donates one dollar, the "match" donor will be obligated to also donate a dollar. Here, however, if 19 people double their donations today, Dan is not obligating himself to donate anything. That's all I'm pointing out.

What if 20 people agree to double their donation on condition the other 19 also double ?
I'll double my $200 if there are 20 others willing to double their donation.

How about doing a $25 donation for every person who doubles today up to a max of 20 people?

Listen, I'm all for it, and kol hakavod.
I was just thinking it may make more sense to say, "if the total reaches $19500 by the end of the day, I will bring it to $20K." That way someone like me who cannot afford to double my donation, will still have an incentive to donate more money, albeit less than my original donation.

I more than doubled my initial donation recently to push us past $10K.
I don't recall it "inspiring" others to do the same to theirs.

It's called a challenge.  MEIR613 responded, IMHO you're just threadcrapping.

Fair enough.

It's called a challenge.
I am suggesting tweaking the challenge so as to fire up even more people to donate more:

I was just thinking it may make more sense to say, "if the total reaches $19500 by the end of the day, I will bring it to $20K." That way someone like me who cannot afford to double my donation, will still have an incentive to donate more money, albeit less than my original donation.

Not in the slightest. I, like everyone else, am just chiming in with suggestions to get people to donate more. I did inquire as to the effectiveness of your method, but only because I was trying to help. Like I said:
Listen, I'm all for it, and kol hakavod.

Doubled mine.

In order for this to happen (I think), some people are going to have to donate more as there is not enough time.

I'll match you....

People see a big number like that and there's not much motivation.
Trust me, if we get up to 19.5K I don't think 20K will be an issue.
