Topic Wiki

I would like to have had the following summary when I was looking for my answers. Since I only read the end of the thread, please add other pertinent information.

Best AntiVirus Software
Neither interferes with K9 now.  Do not have more than one antivirus running at a time.
Free - Avast           download here
Paid - Kaspersky

Best Free Spyware
ublock                    download here for FireFox

Firewalls
Windows Firewall should be ON at all times unless your antivirus software comes with one.
If so, it will probably shut off Windows Firewall on its own.

Before following the information contained here, check the date at the bottom to make sure this wiki is relatively up to date.

Usually I''ll just use a combination of avira and malwerebytes, very effective. The main idea though is to be smart about what you click on, which usb's you plug in, suspicious downloads and the like.

Avast free does not include a firewall.

Does it make sense to run windows firewall (only)  with avast?

Is it sufficiently protective?

Will they cooperate with each other?

If its kedai to pay for effective protection I'm prepared to, to avoid the agmas nefesh of infection.
But k'muvon if there are effective options available for free, there's no mitzvah to waste yiddishe gelt.

That will do. The main thing is to have a decent antivirus that can detect most viruses malware etc. (all the top programs free and paid detection rates are within a couple percent anyhow and all those tests are generally run against known malware not "zero day" vulnerabilities) and possibly more important is for you not to click on any suspicious ads or the like. If you must run suspicious programs run it in a sandboxing program e.g. sandboxie.

You mean in Registry Cleaner?  Don't get too nervous about that.  You can/should clean it up though.
For removing issues (malware), try adwcleaner (scan then clean) and malwarebytes (dont do free pro/premium) trial

This PC Magazine article dated Dec. 2014, gives the 2 top spots for free Anti-virus to Panda & Malwarebytes. Agree or disagree?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Corrected link in this post.

Newegg.com has AVG AntiVirus 2015 (1-PC/ 2-Years) for $39.99 - $14.99 w/ promo code EMCANNW43 - $25 Rebate = Free. Shipping is free. Thanks TDMVP73

Also available, Newegg.com has Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 (5-PC's) for $89.99 - $34.99 w/ promo code EMCANNW38 - $55 Rebate = Free. Shipping is free.

Are these better than any og the free ones? Which is better between the 2?

Is it recommended to have Malwarebyte along with Kaspersky? Or is it just redundant?

True but it definitely speeds up your computer, and they are both great tools

Just curios why it's different than with Avast? Many here seem to recommend Avast and Malwarebytes.
