I would like to have had the following summary when I was looking for my answers. Since I only read the end of the thread, please add other pertinent information.

Best AntiVirus Software
Neither interferes with K9 now.  Do not have more than one antivirus running at a time.
Free - Avast           download here
Paid - Kaspersky

Best Free Spyware
ublock                    download here for FireFox

An anecdote, not for statistical purposes:
I got McAfee free, too.  I installed it earlier this week.  I had AVG on my computer.  McAfee didn't do an immediate scan.  I scheduled it for next week.  Within a day, the computer was vvvveeerrrrryyy sssssllllllllloooooowwwwwwww.  It got so bad we couldn't use it. I wanted to go into McAfee and adjust the settings or do an immediate scan, but the program wouldn't open. At all.  So I uninstalled it.  Going to the control panel and 'uninstalling' it didn't work.  So I googled it, and got a McAfee uninstall program.
I saw (and installed) a program called 'unchecky' that unchecks all the add on programs that they sneak into an installation. Then I uninstalled AVG.  And I downloaded and installed Avast. Unfortunately, I may have some Avast junk installed, too.  So I think I'll
Were you running both at the same time, in the wiki it says never to, that might be the cause of it being so slow,

I was running AVG and McAfee at the same time.  But I thought the problem then is that they each mark each other as a virus.  I didn't know that it causes slowness, but I just looked it up and it can.

Best paid: Eset Nod32.  Kaspersky is also very good but its heavy.
Best free (ime): Avast.  Make sure when installing to choose customize, and select ONLY File shield.

malware removal.. either adwcleaner or malwarebytes antimalware (free version).

Anyone see any free FAR offers for Kaspersky. Mine is expiring in about a month.
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

I bought a paid version of Norton (which I'm pretty happy with) back when I first bought my laptop. My three-year subscription is running out in some 20 something days, though. My question is, should I pay to renew it, or is there anything free out there that does at least as good a job as what I have? The money is not necessarily the greatest issue here, and I'm ready to cough it up, but only if it's worthwhile. If there's anything free out there that will give me exactly what I need then I'd prefer to that direction.
Thanks in advance

Absolutely don't pay to renew it. Avast free is better than any version of Norton. Be sure to do a Custom installation and only check off File Shield (more info upthread).

Thank you. If I check off more will I have to pay, or its just that that's the best set up?

No, that's just the best setup. The other stuff is extra junk you don't need or want.

Just the best way to set it up.

I don't know if Norton is better then Avast.  If I were going to pay for an AV, I've been very happy with Eset NOD32...

Ok thank you all!  :)
P.S. When I first bought the AV it was (obviously) in my pre DDF days...  ;)
