Topic Wiki

I would like to have had the following summary when I was looking for my answers. Since I only read the end of the thread, please add other pertinent information.

Best AntiVirus Software
Neither interferes with K9 now.  Do not have more than one antivirus running at a time.
Free - Avast           download here
Paid - Kaspersky

Best Free Spyware
ublock                    download here for FireFox

Firewalls
Windows Firewall should be ON at all times unless your antivirus software comes with one.
If so, it will probably shut off Windows Firewall on its own.

Before following the information contained here, check the date at the bottom to make sure this wiki is relatively up to date.

just installed avast free on a brand new HP Envy laptop.

It then offered me to "Complete your install by adding the avast! Online Security plugin for Google Chrome"

recommend?

Hmm.  I'd go Kaspersky.  Check this though:

No need.

In my impatience I just installed it.

Is it counterproductive, or just unecessary?
Should I uninstall it?

Avast free does not include a firewall.

Does it make sense to run windows firewall (only)  with avast?

Is it sufficiently protective?

Will they cooperate with each other?

If its kedai to pay for effective protection I'm prepared to, to avoid the agmas nefesh of infection.
But k'muvon if there are effective options available for free, there's no mitzvah to waste yiddishe gelt.

BTW, Consumer Reports (in a recent issue) IIRC rated Avast as the best free antivirus.

Which is why I installed it.
Although my decision was actually based on:
I was a few months ahead of them:)
Thanks Dave!

But the free version doesn't have a firewall.
Hence my inquiry above ....

(I'm not particularly technologically in touch these days, but as I understand a firewall is important for security).

+1

I also wanted to know the answer to the above question. I have Avast on my laptop but I keep getting this virus called WEBCake or something. I keep seeing random words turned into links directing me (and those who I write emails to) to different ad sites. Never clicked on them, but it's crazy annoying. A friend told me he clicked on the link I supposedly sent and his K9 didn't let him load the page.

Anyone else experience this?

When I schedule a virus check in reboot mode with avast, it says everything's clean, but I still see the simanim of viruses.

Avast is great.

Also do this:

1) Download and install Malwarebytes.  here's a link: http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Make sure to NOT enable any trials, and do not install any add-ons.  You want the regular, free version.

2) After installing, allow it to update (it's usually a choice {checkbox} at the end of the install). Again, DO NOT enable free trial.

3) Do Quick Scan.  Remove anything that shows up.
