Any advice on books or methods to sleep "train"  a child. Have trouble getting my 1.5 year old son to go to sleep at night. Any advice appreciated!

Routine. Sticking to a routine is supposed to help.
Ex. Bath time, story time/singing,  sleep.

Babies and small children don't understand cause and effect. The only way they learn is by memory/imitation.
If they are trained that crying before bed brings mommy that is what they will do!
Train them that when they are put into bed the only way out is when the sun is shining. They are fast learners.

Was probably one of the hardest hours of my life listening to my kid's cries and doing nothing, but after a few days, Mommy, Daddy, and Baby were much happier

Earplugs?
Do they make them that small?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

in the world of psychology, they talk a lot about the bond/trust that is created between parent and child during that time period. Research has shown a lot of anxiety and other issues might stem from the lack of trust that when a child cries, his parent is there for him.
With this in mind, i really liked this book. http://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Baby-Whisperer-Connect-Communicate/dp/0345479092/ref=pd_sim_b_5

Warm thick food makes people tired.

Less/no sugar afternoon onwards.

Gradually calm down/relax the atmosphere at home towards sleeping time.

I don't buy it. And if you follow ferber you go in and the child knows you are there for them

Don't exactly agree with that idea. Though I don't think it hurts to go in the room without picking your baby up while they're crying to teach them they're ok. But that idea depends on the age and details IMO. Meanwhile I think that book is a good one.

At 5 or 6 months we let him "cry it out" and it worked great for a while. More recently though if we let him cry when putting him down he will cry to the point where he gags and throws up, so this isn't really an option anymore. Once he is asleep if he wakes up in the middle of the night we do not take him out. Main issue is actually getting him to sleep. I ordered some of the books mentioned, hopefully will be helpful.

I find that baby whisperers are very condescending of people who don't ascribe to their line of beliefs. Anyone else find that?

The people? Maybe. Read the book though and you can take what you want from it and ignore the rest. The book def has some great concepts.
