I guess I was also confused by your post :)
It ain't so ridiculous to believe that, if you only follow the "hot" IPOs. Groupon, Pandora, Zynga, Linked In, I don't think any of them made any money before going public.

it opened at 45.10 hit 50 about 10 min later, it hung around 47-49 for a few min
