Sounds very interesting! I was born in 08701 but do not remember seeing this place. Where is it exactly? Can we get a poll here, who lives in Lakewood, agrees or disagrees etc.?

We have a strong Lakewood presence here, maybe we can accomplish something. Who here has alternative solutions or ideas? Can you share them?

Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Is it located on cedarbridge Ave between mellville and the stadium.

There has been going on for years and years.

They were offered free housing but they declined.

I'm not familiar with all the details,  but Alex wrote that he reason for the define was to save us taxpayers money.

So instead,  they live in tent and cause major fire hazards all the time,   have the police dept respond daily for crime/drugs,   get free Township garbage pickup,  etc.

I feel bad for homeless people -  but not when they make a movement out of it.
They were offered shelter and they turned it down.

What does that tell you?

Once tent city is gone how long do you think the shelter offer will last?

One is dependent on the other.
Tent city will only be gone once they get shelter for everyone.

FWIU it is more of a long term plan.

Getting these people back into a normal life style -  with a big head start (of no rent)  -  will in turn help them find jobs and then no longer need the shelter /government assistance.

I live nearby, in the winter you can't go outside without smelling up your clothing from the smoke. It's horrible! You can't open a window in order to get fresh air because it's all smokey.
As a law abiding / tax paying citizen I find it very unfair that I need to suffer because a group of people would rather "fight the man" and sleep in tents.
The amount of times that the Police are there I would imagine to be several hundred times if not thousands of times a year.
Also I am 99% sure there was more then 1 death and or severely burned person last winter from a tent going up in flames.

So much misinformation about Tent City being carelessly strewn about. It is incredibly convenient (not to mention COWARDLY) to speak ill of something that is outside your own little comfort zone. Why don't you come and meet the people who live here? Because they are NOT a bunch of derelicts, junkies, and subversives. They are human. They each have stories, but all of those stories combined boil down to this: we are but ONE catastrophic illness, ONE bad stroke of luck, and ONE paycheck away from Tent City ourselves. When you're there listening to their stories, you realize Minister Steve has created a genuine community. By filling a need that has long gone ignored by the Township of Lakewood and Ocean County, he's doing his neighbors in Lakewood and the township itself a huge favor. And what have YOU done? Except sit at your computer, spew your vitriol, and list reasons why the homeless have no right to exist. Heaven forbid in your own backyard...

If you yourself are not willing to do anything to help the homeless, the best thing you can do is keep your fear, lies, and inhumane thoughts to yourself. Stop being part of the problem, and perhaps try being a part of the solution.

Highly unlikely, if as Alex agreed to me, that these homeless people don't want to find a job.

Created a genuine community?
Ha!
I'm sure Hell's Angels, the Bloods and the Crips, and the KKK also consider their respective groups a "genuine community."

I believe in survival of the fitest.

What happened 100 or 200 years ago with the homeless they actually sat and needed to work for their survival (whether it was begging or finding leftover food to eat). These days people expect everything to be handed to them. (not only the homeless are like that, people who decide to have kids for a living so they get more government $$$)
