Jake Arrieta to Philadelphia: Good news because Brewers, Cardinals and Nationals didn't sign him. Also it makes Philly a division contender (they also signed Carlos Santana), Washington can't coast until the playoffs anymore.

Arietta has been in the league for 9 years. He had one very good season and one absurdly good season, and otherwise has been average to above average. He's not getting long-term money but he's getting $30 million next year entering age 32.

Maybe I'm just angry at you because you left out an NL East team...

68-31 2.73 ERA in 4.5 years with the Cubs, plus 5-3 3.08 with 66 strikeouts in 53 innings in the playoffs. Even though YU is better, younger and has more pitches which should help him have a longer career, Arrieta is still really good.
The Phillies won 4 less games than the Mets last year, but they have an improving young team, plus added Santana and Arrieta, they also have tons of $ to spend mid season to add to team if they're close. I know the Mets had injuries last year, but they always do.

Again, nice to lump all of his numbers together, but going 22-6 with a 1.77 ERA might skew the overall numbers a bit. (And I assume we don't need a discussion about a W-L record pitching for a team that has won 300 games in the last 3 years).
As for the Phils, you're not way off, but neither Santana nor Arietta (as argued above) is a blue-chip superstar, and the Mets had a few of those on the DL for most of last year. If it happens again, maybe you're right; otherwise, I'll take the Mets over the Phils pretty comfortably.

W/L isn't a good way to compare pitchers or one of the best stats, but I was trying to keep things simple cause not everyone is up to advanced stats. If it's better let's go with 19.9 WAR over 4.5 years. And the 22-6 1.77, 8.6 WAR season did happen so it does count.
Phils do have a superstar in the making Hoskins, who in less than a third of a season hit 18 HR's and for those counting it's a 2.0 WAR with 1.014 OPS. I'm not saying everything will click in Phila but it might, and it might take till 2019. I'm not too optimistic about Met's hitting, or pitching health, but that's just me.

if they are close, its because of mets injuries, which means neither is sniffing the playoffs. my point was philly isnt a contender yet. telling me they finished a few games behind an injury ravaged team tells me nothing

The comparison to the Mets was answering Amusch's Q and anger regarding forgetting about the Mets.

Mets over Jays in 6.
The two CY winners meet in Game 1, Sanchez vs. Thor.

Maybe I was just early  :D :D :D

Never questioned that the Mets have talent (and play a lot of games against the Marlins) the Q is how long the pitching stays healthy. Stick a fork in the Jays, Yanks and Red Sox will rule AL East for a while.

Interesting...
Standings as of today Mets 15-7, Phillies 15-8, Nationals 11-14.

That was more impressive than the walk off. It's plays like that, that really make the sport.

When they pull that shift why not just bunt down the third baseline every time?

I've wondered the same. Maybe it ain't as easy as it looks.
