It should have been a clear take all the way, even if the pitch was right down the middle. He has one career hit.
Yup. There's also a reason he's one of the fastest guys in the league, but never starts.

He got to three balls (luckily) and ESPN announcers were predicting a non swing on the off chance they walk him - it would have changed the game if he was on first (Baez up with no outs and a runner on second or third within two pitches).

Agreed, but look at the alternative. He's up 3-2 and doesn't swing, and gets one down the middle...i think it was a lose lose for a guy who can't hit.

Maddon has always made unorthodox (am I allowed to say that) moves. With Chapman he got lucky and it paid off with a championship. Here he has someone batting that has no business being up there.

Indeed. He does feel the need to be out of the box. His whole pitcher batting 8th shtick is a perfect example. This particular case was a bit more complicated though. It was the right move to take out rizzo for gore, and it paid off with the tying run. Nobody knew that gore would see the bat twice after that, and it got a whole lot more complicated to take him out after that with most of the bench exhausted.

Out of the box is one thing but pure stupidity is another.

They are not mutually exclusive. Sometimes it's a pro, sometimes it's a con. I do believe this gore situation was a carp shoot, but I also believe it was more complicated than it seemed. Maddon definitely does need to be put in line though. Keep in mind, we played 44 games in 43 days, with one day rest, to finish the season. That's insane.

Stupidity as in having the pitcher bat 8th.

I think he's a good manager, if only he didn't always have to show everyone how smart he is.

Was it 44 in 43 or did they have to be ready to play -but got rained out and didn't complete the game- in some of those days?

You are correct, I stand corrected. Twice they were rained out. Once was pre game, and once was in extra innings and was continued the following day prior to the scheduled game.
